Year 6/Dosbarth Chwech
Shwmae! Hello and a warm welcome to Year 6!
This term in Year 6, the children have been engaging in a wide range of thoughtful, creative and challenging learning experiences, showing growing independence and maturity in their work.
In Literacy, pupils have been exploring the structure and language of Shakespearean sonnets, with a focus on Sonnet 18. They have compared different poems, identified key features such as rhyme schemes and rhythm, and even worked collaboratively to reconstruct and perform parts of the poem. They have also developed their understanding of more complex vocabulary by interpreting and paraphrasing the poem into modern language, showing excellent comprehension skills.
In Maths, we have been focusing on algebra, helping children move from basic arithmetic to more abstract thinking. They have been exploring patterns, using simple formulae, solving problems using function machines, and working with expressions and substitution. This learning helps to build strong reasoning skills and prepare them for the next stage of their mathematical journey.
In Religious Education, we have been developing a deeper understanding of Catholic Social Teaching, including themes such as participation, solidarity, and subsidiarity. Through practical activities, discussions and debates, the children have explored how these values apply in real-life situations. They have also learnt about the Jewish festival of Rosh Hashanah, reflecting on its importance and thinking about their own choices and actions.
In Science, the children have been investigating materials and their properties, with a particular focus on friction. They planned and carried out their own investigations, exploring which materials would be most suitable for designing trainers. They then presented their findings in a “Dragons’ Den” style, building confidence in speaking and explaining their ideas.
Across the wider curriculum, pupils have taken part in a variety of creative and practical projects. These include exploring Futurism in art, designing and making products such as toolbelts, developing healthy snack ideas in cooking, and continuing work on STEM projects, including designing 3D printed assistive devices. In Humanities, they have explored the role of engineers in solving real-world problems, thinking about how careers can make a positive impact on communities around the world.
In Welsh, the children have been practising past tense sentence patterns through games, speaking activities and writing emails, helping to build confidence in communication.
We also continue to encourage responsibility and care for our school environment. The children have been helping to maintain our outdoor areas, looking after plants and vegetables, and understanding the importance of caring for living things.
It has been a busy and rewarding term, with Year 6 showing enthusiasm, creativity and a strong sense of responsibility as they prepare for the next stage of their learning journey.
