Year 2/Dosbarth Dau

Croeso i'r Dosbarth 2!

This term in Year 2, our learners have been busy developing their skills across the curriculum in exciting and meaningful ways. In English, the children are writing instructional texts, including how to make bug hotels. They are growing in confidence as writers, using familiar words and phrases, applying their knowledge of letters and sounds to write independently, and beginning to use capital letters and full stops more accurately. They are also enjoying experimenting with new vocabulary and talking about what they read, helping to deepen their understanding.

Our learning is rooted in a Froebelian approach, which values hands-on experiences, play, and exploration. We encourage children to take ownership of their learning, make independent choices, and develop confidence in sharing their ideas. Through this approach, children build resilience, curiosity, and a love of learning that supports their overall development.

In Maths, we are exploring 2D and 3D shapes through practical, hands-on experiences. Through play, construction, and real-life contexts, children are developing a secure understanding of shape and space. They have been recognising and naming shapes, counting sides, edges, faces and vertices, drawing 2D shapes, identifying lines of symmetry, sorting shapes, and creating patterns. These activities promote independence and problem-solving, allowing children to explain their thinking and see the relevance of maths in everyday life.

In Religious Education, we are learning about Pentecost. The children have discovered that Pentecost means “the fiftieth day” and is a time when Jewish people celebrated God’s gift of the Law. We have been exploring the Good News that the Holy Spirit is a helper and guide for everyone, supporting us to share God’s love through our actions.

In Science, the children have shown great enthusiasm and curiosity, especially when taking on the role of scientists. After making jelly, we explored changes in materials and introduced the concept of states of matter. The children are also learning about living things, their habitats, and life cycles.

We are also continuing to develop a sense of responsibility and care for our environment. By regularly watering the plants and vegetables in our outdoor area, the children are learning that plants are living things with needs, and that their care helps them grow and thrive.
