Year 1/Dosbarth Un
Croeso i Dosbarth 1
This summer term, Year 1 has continued to show great enthusiasm and curiosity in all areas of their learning. In English, we have been enjoying the story The Little Honey Bee, which has inspired a wonderful interest in nature and the important role bees play in our environment. The children have explored the text through discussions, descriptive writing and creative activities, developing both their reading comprehension and writing skills.
Our learning about bees has extended beyond the classroom. The children have discovered how bees make honey and why they are so important for pollination. To bring this learning to life, we worked together to make delicious honey flapjacks, carefully following instructions and practising key cooking skills. We also took part in an exciting outdoor project, placing a red Mason bee house near the pond and planting flowers to attract more bees. The children have taken great pride in caring for our outdoor area and observing the wildlife that visits our school.
Phonics remains a key focus in Year 1, and we practise Monster Phonics every day. Through these daily sessions, the children are building confidence, improving their fluency, and developing strong foundations in reading and spelling. It has been wonderful to see their growing independence when tackling new words and texts.
In mathematics, we have been strengthening our understanding of numbers through practical activities, exploring addition, subtraction, place value and problem-solving. The children are increasingly confident in explaining their reasoning and applying their skills in different contexts.
Our wider curriculum has also been full of exciting opportunities. In Design and Technology, children have developed their skills through cooking and making, while in art they have explored creative techniques such as weaving and model building. We continue to make the most of both our indoor and outdoor learning environments, with activities such as block play, construction and imaginative play supporting collaboration, resilience and creativity.
In RE, we have been learning about Pentecost and the important message it carries. The children have explored how Jesus’ friends showed courage by going out into the world to share God’s message. This has encouraged thoughtful discussions about kindness, bravery and how we can make a positive difference in our own community.
Overall, it has been a busy and rewarding term so far, and we are very proud of all the children for their hard work, enthusiasm and positive attitudes to learning.
